Standard Bank SA hosts a dialogue that seeks to address critical issues around women's economic participation and financial inclusion 

The US House of Representatives has approved a three-year extension of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA). However, uncertainty remains over South Africa’s continued inclusion amid strained diplomatic relations between Washington and Pretoria. The bill, which would extend AGOA until December 2028, now moves to the Senate for further consideration. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Dr Sizo Nkala, Research Fellow at the Centre for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa.

The latest report by the Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) shows that trade between Tanzania and South Africa consistently favoured Dar es Salaam between 2020 and 2024, with gold accounting for the bulk of exports. According to the report, Tanzania’s exports to South Africa nearly doubled over the period, rising from an average of about $1.145 million in 2020 to roughly $2.293 million in 2024. While gold dominates export earnings, Tanzania also exports a range of other products to South Africa, including agricultural commodities such as tobacco and coffee, as well as apparel and mineral fuels. Thami Ngubeni spoke to Donald MacKay, CEO of XA Global Trade Advisors.

Ghana’s government paid $1.47 billion in 2025 to settle legacy energy sector debts, restoring a depleted World Bank guarantee and clearing arrears owed to power producers. The West African nation’s power sector has long struggled with unpaid debts, which contributed to widespread electricity outages.

 

Last year, President John Dramani Mahama pledged to reduce the $2.5 billion owed to independent power producers and gas suppliers. In response, the Independent Power Producers described the debt clearance as a major milestone, saying it will help restore financial stability and operational confidence across the sector.
