Experts in South Africa have raised alarm over the growing legal pressure stemming from regulations under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), which expose broad non-compliance in the handling of employee medical records by employers. This includes challenges around access, ownership, storage, retention, and proper disposal of classified information. The regulations gazetted in March, establish binding requirements around the security, confidentiality and lawful processing of health data. Regional integration in East Africa is gaining fresh momentum, as President William Ruto  of Kenya and President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, move to eliminate longstanding trade barriers. The two leaders have directed the removal of all non-tariff barriers between their two countries by the end of May 2026, following high-level talks in Dar es Salaam. Kenya and Tanzania Move to Scrap Trade Barriers in Major Boost for East African Integration

South Africa's Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources  has announced that the retail price of all grades of petrol will rise by three rand and 27 cents per litre, while diesel is set to increase by six rand and 19 cents per litre. The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa, GIWUSA, has condemned these increases calling them "a robbery in broad daylight,". They argue that workers as well as small businesses are forced to carry the burden of a global energy system characterised conflict, uncertainty and profit. The union is calling for a suspension of all fuel levies.
