Experts in South Africa have raised alarm over the growing legal pressure stemming from regulations under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), which expose broad non-compliance in the handling of employee medical records by employers. This includes challenges around access, ownership, storage, retention, and proper disposal of classified information. The regulations gazetted in March, establish binding requirements around the security, confidentiality and lawful processing of health data.
