AI readiness depends on skills development and workplace adaptation, says University of Pretoria expert

As International Workers’ Day approaches, experts such as Sean Kruger from South Africa’s University of Pretoria argue that AI readiness is no longer just about access to technology, but about continuous learning, skills development and workplace adaptation.

Research indicates that AI preparedness remains limited, with many workers lacking adequate training and support. As AI reshapes work, both employers and institutions must focus on upskilling and redesigning jobs to ensure workers can adapt and remain employable.
