There have been mixed feelings about the South African government’s extension of the fuel levy relief in response to volatility in global oil prices. The temporary reduction in the general fuel levy was due to come to an end early next month but has now been extended to June.
Last month, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Mineral and Petroleum Resources jointly announced a temporary reduction in the general fuel levy of $0.18 per litre from the beginning of this month until May 5, to provide limited short‑term relief to households from rising fuel prices as the Middle East conflict continues.
