JCP - Why People Attack

Published Feb 20, 2025, 5:00 PM

My good friend Will Smith does some amazing work in the youth development and youth reform space. He's actually an idol of mine.

He was recently under attack after the government announced some well-deserved funding for his programs and it prompted me to ask why people would attack someone doing so much good.

Haitanglanes. Here we'll get back to the Building Better Humans Project podcast. I want to talk a little bit today about a good friend of mine, Will Smith, who runs JCP Youth in Tasmania. Just google it. You'll find so many videos on YouTube. You'll find so much information out there. And something that Will is doing and his team are doing really well is the youth reform space. And they've been smashing this space for years. And I've watched this young man grind and grind and grind for years. He once said to me, when I started this, I had a house, two cars, and a partner. I now don't have any of those things. He's literally poured his own hard earned money, blood, sweat, and I'm sure plenty of tears into what he does. But after years and years, he's finally really started to break through with the government and he started to receive some significant funding. Now one of those fundings, and this is public knowledge, so it's not me speaking out of school, was three point seven million dollars. A week or two ago they did the official announcement of that huge I've watched this guy. I remember when he got his first brand of seventy thousand dollars, which isn't a lot when you're trying to run an organization. And there's been many, many years where he's just lived at mum and dad's place and he hasn't even had the capacity to pay his own rent and do stuff. But he never ever quit on these kids. And it's a really big thing. But here's the thing. Since they made that announcement, they've been getting attacked by people. People have been bagging at his parents' businesses, himself, the organization, trying to make false claims about the organization, trying to undermine them, which is absolutely disgusting based off what this organization does and how dedicated their people are. And it got me thinking, why do people attack like this? And this is my experience as a society, there's a societal norm and a lot of people are average. Of course, there needs to be an average in any society or any group of people. So imagine this average group of people as a big ball. We're all in there together down the bottom. There's a few people that are sort of hanging on by a thread that are dropping off the bottom of that ball lower everything they don't have the better opportunities in life and whatever, drug addiction and alcohol and lower socio economic and no money, and life is just really tough for them, and no one seems to want to do much for them, even though WILL is the ball itself is as long as we can pay our rental and pay our mortgage and we're getting along okay. But then above that ball are all the people that come up and are just trying to rise and bring society with them. And what I've noticed is often rather than lifting ourselves up being inspired by people that are doing something, we want to grab those people above us and we just want to pull them back down. We want to pull them back into the group because growth and change is hard. So rather than grow, I'll just pull those people back down to us, so they're back down a part of the average. That's my experience. Now this is public knowledge again because it was posted on social media. Posted I want to refer to where these people are attacking JCP Youth, just to highlight and again go and do your own research, have a look at what this organization is doing. I've spoken to kids, I've had kids on my program that Will's work because I've mentored and been mentored by Will. Over the last four or five years, we've mutually helped each other in so many areas and this is a phenomenal human I have no hesitation whatsoever in vouching for Will or JCP Youth, but this has all happened since they had the announcement of getting at three point seven million dollars, which is obviously upset some people. And I know that money is going to go to good use, so JCP themselves wrote over the last week, the JCP Board of Directors have been made aware of information and comments regarding incidents on our programs. These concerns have been thoroughly investigated and self reported to the independent regulator, with investigations showing no truth to the claims made. It has also come to our attention that individuals not involved in any formal processes have targeted an employee, including through abuse and threats. This behavior is unacceptable and as a board, we stand firmly by all of our employees and our programs. JCP Youth operates in a complex space with young people who often face unique challenges, and we welcome any information regarding childs safety measures, complaints or concerns about our processes. As mandatory reporters, we are committed to continuing to work with the independent regulator to ensure the highest standard of safety are upheld. We condemn any threats, abuse, or baseless accusations directed at our team, especially when they extend to their families or occur in public settings. We will not be intimidated or deterred from our mission by a small and select few. JCP Youth is dedicated to supporting young people and fostering positive change within our community. Now, I don't know what the claims, well, I don't know what's been said, but it's pretty devastating that an organization that's doing so much good is being attacked by individuals or people that have some sort of being in their bonnet because they have been able to achieve the thing. Again, the people making these comments, they're in the ball and probably the lower end of the ball, and they're reaching up and trying to bring people down. Now, Will did his own posts sharing that one from JCPU, and this one's a little bit more personalized, and I'm not going to lie, it angers me a little bit that he's going through this, But he's a strong man and he's very strong with his vision, his values and his ideals, and he will get through this because weak people would never bring someone like Will down. But this is what he wrote. Since the announcement of government funding to JCP Youth last week, I have been subjected to relentless abuse, threats and ill informed accusations from certain individuals over the past six years. I have faced repeated complaints from people who have targeted me based on my background as a police officer for ten years. I now encounter individuals connected to pass investigations, arrests and cases that want retribution. I've faced unto allegations from competitors of my parents' business people. I've made internal complaints about parents of neglected children who received advice they did not want to hear. In the past three years, I've acted as a whistleblower on three significant matters in Tasmania, each of which have been discussed in Parliament. I'm proud to stop against abuse, neglect and system failures that have harmed vulnerable people. I've accepted the abuse and threats from each matter when raised. While these ongoing attacks have taken a toll, they have never deterred me from my work. I've devoted my life to building this service, and I'm incredibly proud of the impact JCP Youth has made. I refuse to be intimidated by individuals who have never met me, never spoken to the young people we support, and have never taken the opportunity to witness the work we do. However, I must draw the line when threats and abuse extended my family members when I approached in public while with a young person. I'm transparent and integral, and I welcome any legitimate scrutiny. What it will not tolerate is base of public attacks driven by a vocal minority, some of whom pose a significant risk to children themselves. What a powerful way to handle this. He's a very, very strong man, but how sad that he has to handle this at the end of the day. When you put your head up, even for positives, when you're trying to make a change in society, when you're trying to put your heart, your soul, your passion into changing lives, you're going to be judged negatively, positively, and everywhere in between by people not doing that. You're going to have people to try and tear you down rather than lift themselves up. Because, as I said, at the start of this lifting yourself up, changing who you are, where you are, your attitude, your mindset. That's a challenge that's hard to do. What's really easy is to grab someone else and become an anchor to them or try and pull them down. At the end of the day, I love this man with all my heart. He's the most passionate human that I've ever met, and he's built a phenomenal team. And if there's a man in this country that deserves that sort of funding to create the level of change that he's creating, it is Wilson. Brother. I stand behind you and I always will for those of you that are putting these sort of attacks out there, and I know you would never listen to this podcast for you the exact antithesis of who we are, of what we do, and you will not stop myself, Will or other people working in these spaces to change young people's lives, because young people need people like Will, myself and our teams to get to where they're trying to go in life and where they deserve to be.
