The 2026 California governor’s race has been dramatically upended with the suspension of Rep. Eric Swalwell's campaign following multiple allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, which he denies. Multiple polls now place billionaire Tom Steyer at or near the top of the field. One of the clearest indicators of Steyer’s rise has come with an endorsement from the California Teachers Association (CTA) — who had endorsed Swalwell. Despite this, Gov. Gavin Newsom has pointedly refused to endorse any Democratic candidate — and reporting suggests it’s not just neutrality, but dissatisfaction.
