A longtime Fourth of July tradition in Long Beach is facing major upheaval after the California Coastal Commission denied a permit for the city’s signature “Big Bang on the Bay” fireworks show, triggering backlash from residents, business owners and local leaders. The decision means that for the first time in 15 years, the July 3 celebration over Alamitos Bay will go without its hallmark fireworks display. This comes as America celebrates its 250th birthday.

FIREWORKS FALLOUT: Coastal Commission Denies July 4th Display

A new Emerson College Polling survey shows Republican Steve Hilton leads the overall field with 17%, followed by Republican Chad Bianco and Democrat Tom Steyer, tied at 14% each. Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra jumped from 3% to tie at 10% with former Rep. Katie Porter. After the abrupt exit of Rep. Eric Swalwell, Becerra jumped seven points overall and gained 15 points among Democratic voters, now capturing 19% of the Democratic vote, nearly matching Steyer’s 20%.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s memoir, Young Man in a Hurry, briefly landed on national best‑seller lists earlier this year, but newly disclosed data shows the book’s apparent success was largely driven by Newsom himself. According to sales tracking and federal filings, the memoir sold roughly 97,000 print copies since its February release—but nearly two‑thirds of those copies, about 67,000, were purchased and distributed by Newsom’s own political action committee, the Campaign for Democracy.  The PAC spent approximately $1.56 million buying the books.
