The Geneva Tennis team is at the state tournament from yesterday through today and given their hard work all year, we’ll see how they finish today. 

Geneva baseball also swept Corpus Christi Incarnate Word in a doubleheader last night, picking up 2 district wins. 

I want to now take this time to acknowledge and thank a big part of our Boerne Radio crew- Roland Ruiz is a producer here at the station and is a big part of a lot of what you hear over the airwaves especially with sports. He’s also well-known as the PA Announcer for the Spurs, Missions, UIW Cardinals, and Gunslingers. He got notified last week that he will be inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame! Much-deserved for Roland… Thank you for being a big part of the station’s success and for being a great mentor!

It’s Tuesday April 14th. 

 

And it was on this date in 1912 when the unsinkable RMS Titanic sunk.   The last living survivor Millvina Dean from England was the youngest passenger on board.  She died at the age of 97 in 2009.  She had no memory of the event because she was only 9 weeks old.

And a special Happy Birthday to Annie Walther over at Crestmont Private Wealth, William Rice and Alessandra Soltis.

 

Bandera County has declared Highway 46 as inadequate by elected leaders due to a high number of deaths and crashes. At last week’s commissioner's court meeting, County Judge Richard Evans and the board unanimously approved a resolution demanding that TxDOT formally respond with a definitive timeline to make safety improvements to the road.  In the last 10 years, there have been well over 500 crashes, ending in 13 deaths and 44 injuries, with more than half of the fatalities caused by head on collisions. TxDOT spokeswoman Jennifer Serold says that safety is the organization's top priority, and that they will continue to work with local officials to improve Highway 46. 

 

Yesterday morning was Miss Constance’s last day at the Patrick Heath Public Library after more than 20 years. She first began as a youth services assistant but quickly became a staple in the kid’s department with her weekly story time. Hundreds gathered for her retirement party-students and parents left heartfelt messages about her legacy and impact on the community.  But one thing that won’t come to an end is her reading to your kids every Saturday morning at 7:45 here on Boerne Radio.

 

And the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees were announced yesterday, with a few Boerne Radio favorites featured on the list. On November 14th, Phil Collins, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Oasis, Sade, Luther Vandross and Wu-Tang Clan will be inducted. 

 

And in another Hall of Fame, congrats to Boerne Radio’s Production Manager Roland Ruiz who got the call that he will be inducted into the San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame.   Not only do you hear Roland’s voice on Boerne Radio, you hear him as the arena announcer for your San Antonio Spurs, and stadium announcer for the San Antonio Missions.  Congratulations Roland - we’re so very proud of you.

It’s Monday April 13th.

 

And it was on this date in 1861 the Civil War began when the Confederacy fired on Fort Sumter in South Carolina.  The war had several names depending on which side you were on.  After the war in the South it was called The War Between the States.  Northern historians referred to it as the War of the Rebellion and Great Rebellion.  Even into the 20th Century, the Confederate term was War for Southern Independence, but it fell out of use.  On border states it was called The Brother’s War.

If you’ve made the drive out to Tapatio Springs on Johns Road in the last 6 months you’ve seen the sign on the left side that says coming soon: Jubilee Villas Living and Memory Care, well tomorrow morning at 11:30 is the groundbreaking ceremony.  Brothers Elliott and Dalton are heading the project and they say they want their residents to feel like they are living in a big custom home. 

 

Alright scam alert season is high - Lt. Kevin Klaerner of the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office called me on Friday and said they had received about 15 calls from Boerne Residents in a panic about paying fines for failing to appear for jury service…and they prey on our senior citizens.  Here’s Deputy Sheriff Michael from the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office.

Battle of the Badges took place on Saturday in Main Plaza during Market Days, and the first responder getting the most donations for Love Kendall County Kids came down to both Police Chief Steve Perez and Fire Chief Manny Casarez where the Fire Chief took the crown, but Chief Perez took one for the team as well. Our friends at Tootie Pie graciously donated their delicious pies to get smashed in the rivaling department heads face, but the spectacle was all for a good cause. 

 

It is the 2nd week of the month so that means it’s Bulky Item and brush collection week - your trash day is the day to put out the big stuff too big for the can.  If its brush make sure it’s chopped and tied up.

Big weekend for Geneva track and field at their meet- every individual athlete placed 5th or higher in their competition, and 7 personal records were set. Among these, 1 bronze medal, 3 silver, and 3 gold. What a weekend. 

It doesn’t end there for the Eagles- Peyton Eiland from girls soccer earned a TAPPS 4A 1st-Team all state award, and quarterback Caleb Quitadamo is getting some attention with an offer for McPherson College over the weekend.

Kristin Cantu will be the new Champion Tennis coach, per a post from the athletics page. She has served the past 9 years as the assistant coach. She said in a quote she is excited to grow the program and “inspire” the next generation of athletes. 

Rory Mcilroy wins the Masters after a strong start and close call the final two days. He shot a -12, and Scotte Scheffler came in 2nd with -11. Mcilroy is a back-to-back champion and joins a group of select few who have accomplished the feat. 

And the Spurs have officially completed their regular season falling to Denver on Sunday. They have the 2nd seed in the west, and the play-in tournament is very crucial this week folks. Portland and Phoenix will play each other, and that winner will face San Antonio on Sunday in game 1 in round 1 of the playoffs… man does it feel good to say that again.
