Well, other than two old men yelling at each other for 2 hours, there was actually sports on television last night!

Drama in the AL West as the Astros and Rangers continue to collectively trail the Seattle Mariners for the top spot, and we are just a few weeks away from the All-Star Break. Rangers continue a bad losing streak after an opening game with Baltimore last night, losing 11-2. The Astros start a new series tonight with the Mets… and Houston currently has the 2nd place spot with a 40-40 record, yes they are right at .500! Still a lot of baseball to be played…

Alright, let’s recap the Spurs 2024 draft class… the draft continued yesterday with the Spurs making 2 more selections off the board. We all know Stephon Castle was the 4th pick of the draft, they traded away their 8th pick… and in the 2nd round, pick #36, San Antonio selected Juan Nunez from overseas… and with the 48th pick, Harrison Ingram from North Carolina was selected. The million dollar question now remains, if the Spurs, at all, cashed in with their picks?

And the Gunslingers are back in action at the Freeman Coliseum Saturday night. The Frisco Fighters come to town for a 6:05 showdown. Tickets are available on their website- SanAntonioGunslingers.com.

Here’s a positive prelude to the upcoming football season for the Boerne Greyhounds… LoneStarPreps.com has listed 4 players as a part of their Top Returning Defensive Players for 5A Division 2, District 13. Jake Perez, Jaxon Baize, Logan Fritcher, and Logan Schram were mentioned… Now we know the Greyhounds are assured to be a dominant team once again in 2024. 

In Major League Baseball… The Rangers came close but with not enough against Baltimore, 2-1 they fall. Astros lose to the Mets on the road, 7-2. Houston will get another crack at it today at 3:10, and the Rangers at 6:15. 

In Minor League Baseball, The Missions defeated Midland, 5-3 last night. The series continues through Sunday. The Missions are 31-34 on the season. 

And the Gunslingers are back in action at the Freeman Coliseum tonight. The Frisco Fighters come to town for a 6:05 showdown. Tickets are available on their website- SanAntonioGunslingers.com.

Boerne Radio Sports - June 29, 2024

It’s Friday June 28th. 

It was on this day in 1919, the Texas Senate ratified the 19th Amendment granting women the right to vote making us the first Southern state to do so, and the ninth in the nation. 

I’m Baron Wiley.  

GVTC held their 2024 annual meeting, welcomed the new Chairman of the Board, Clint Swindall and Josh Pettiette as the new President and CEO, plus announced an additional distribution of 8.25 million dollars in Capital Credits bringing the annual total to $23.85 million given back. GVTC also honored the retiring President and CEO Ritchie Sorrells at his final meeting, and all incumbent board members were also re-elected.

The City of Boerne is again hosting the fantastic 4th of July fireworks show at 9 pm with a production that will last 15-20 minutes.   Although the fields near the show will be closed for safety reasons, there will be free parking that is first come first serve at City Park and Champion High School, plus parking by donation at the Kendall County Fairgrounds. Food trucks will be on site with classic fair food, but you are more than welcome to bring your own coolers and snacks, as long as there is no glass.  And make sure you’re tuned in to Boerne Radio 103.9FM as we provide the patriotic soundtrack. 

After the great rain we experienced over the past two weeks, the Kendall County Commissioners Court has decided to lift the fireworks ban they set in place two weeks ago. County Fire Marshall Brady Constantine noted that the Keetch-Bryam Drought Index has “come down significantly”, meaning traditional celebrations with aerial fireworks are once again allowed.   Our sympathies to all the indoor dogs listening right now…its coming to a neighborhood near you.

We’ve got some names from the Boerne Champion Chargers to acknowledge this Thursday. We’ll start with two swimmers who had times in the top 100 nationally. Bexon Harrison was awarded All-American by the NISCA in the boys 50 freestyle, and Kate Canales picked up an award in the girls 100 breaststroke. 

The THSCA has released their Super Elite Team and a few Chargers happen to be on it… Jordan Ballin and Sawyer Smith both made the elite team while Evan Kuhl was awarded the Gold Glove Award. 

The Champion Chargers- always a force to be reckoned with. 

Speaking of “forces to be reckoned with,” you would think that’d be the Spurs last night with two top 10 picks in the draft. On pick 4, the Spurs selected who they were aligned to pick in many mock drafts earlier this month and that was Stephon Castle, recent champion from UConn… but when their turn came again on pick 8, they ended up selecting Rob Dillingham from Kentucky… then traded him seconds later to Minnesota for some future picks. Now, I really don’t know what the strategy is here, but I know for sure fans were not happy about the blindside from the Spurs.. Only time will tell what the move was about. The draft continues tonight at 7… The Spurs have the 5th and 18th picks this time around.
