Yesterday, your Geneva Eagle boys soccer team played for a state final berth… now I don’t know what they’re feeding the soccer players at Geneva School of Boerne but it must have some magic formula. A close game for the boys with the British International School of Houston, but in the end, the Eagles’ season would end with a 3-1 victory by the opposition. In total for Geneva- a bronze medal by the boys, and a state runner-up title by the girls. A historic season for soccer, and an amazing one in my book. Way to go Eagles and congrats on an incredible season! 

Back to district play and one tournament for area baseball and softball teams- Greyhound baseball will play Caney Creek early at 12:30 today. Greyhound softball will battle Alamo Heights at home at 7pm. Champion softball will head to San Antonio to take on Pieper at 7. Champion baseball is in tournament play and played 2 games yesterday, with 2 coming up in the late afternoon hours of today.

It’s Friday March 6th. 

 

It was on this date in 1836 that the Alamo fell to the Mexican Army led by General Santa Anna. Over the course of 13 days, 187 Texans led by James Bowie and William B. Travis defended the fort, only to succumb to the brute force of over 2,000 militants. In the early morning, the Mexican Army broke through the outer wall and left only 15 survivors, but the Alamo became a symbol to other Texas Defenders and remains the cradle of Texas liberty.

 

Also today is David Gilmour’s 79th birthday - he’s the guitar player for Pink Floyd.  Bob Wills was born on this date in 1905 - (still the king) - and more rock stars in Boerne include Rick Goodrich - he’s your Chief of safety and Security for Boerne ISD, and also to my friend Jim Grier - you hear his voice every weekend introducing the God and Our Dogs show here on Boerne Radio - and one more for tomorrow - Mr. Paul Barwick - the director of special projects for Boerne.

 

Let’s talk about the weekend…

Due to the coming rain with potential heavy rain, thunder and lightning (the lightning sponsored by Mr. Electric of Boerne), and maybe even some hail, the Cibolo Center for Conservation has preemptively canceled the Cibolo Farmer’s Market tomorrow.    Be checking the Boerne Parks and Rec’s website and social media for updates on movies in the park scheduled for tonight Minecraft is scheduled to start at sundown.  

 

Another outdoor event is the Power of the Past 40th Anniversary Show at The AgriCultrual Museum and Arts Center…a huge celebration with vintage cars, tractors, and engines on display, and Live music by The Flashbacks.  That event is scheduled to start at 10 tomorrow - admission is free, but a donation is appreciated. 

 

Also tomorrow is the outdoor chili Cook-off at Waring Hall in a benefit for the Waring Volunteer Fire Department.

 

And on Sunday morning - the rain won’t stop this…Daylight savings is back where we move our clocks forward one hour starting at 2am.  

The burn ban is still on of course until further notice. 

 

Hill Country Family Services has a new wishlist for the month of March, highlighting the current greatest needs for the corner cupboard. This month they are asking for donations of canned salmon, dog food, Kleenex, brown rice, ranch style beans and small cans of coffee.  But cash is where your dollar goes the furthest thanks to the food bank - $25 feeds a family of 4 for a week!  See what I mean at hcfstx.org.

 

Spring is almost here, but at Fair Oaks Ranch elementary, spring chickens have already arrived. Kindergarten students have been observing the eggs closely over the past few weeks,  as well as learning about the life cycle of animals.

It’s Thursday March 5th. 

And a couple of Boerne Birthdays today…Happy Birthdayto Blake Wilson, he’s the guy running the Wolf Den Gaming, and to Fly Fisherman Chris Pauriea. 

On this date in 1836, Santa Anna held a counsel of war to plan the final attack on the Alamo...and ordered his artillery batteries moved closer to the fort….According to tradition, Lt. Col. William B. Travis drew a line in the sand, offering  the defenders a final chance to stay or leave.  All but one stayed, and the Alamo would fall the next day.

 

The Boerne Parks Improvement projects continue, and after 10 months of work, City leadership, residents, and ball players gathered at Northrup Park to officially open the new Field 11.  Before renovations, Field 11 was not used for organized league play due to its rough playing surface and lack of lighting. Now, new LED dark-sky compliant lighting has been installed to expand hours of use.  Other improvements include a  redone in and out field, a new irrigation system and a shiny new scoreboard and press box.  

 

The beloved Creek Restaurant, which has been a staple to Boerne for many years, will be closing its doors on March 14th. Staff took to Instagram to announce the closure, thanking all of the guests that came through their doors and celebrating every occasion. You can still make a reservation to say your goodbyes before next Saturday.

 

The Boerne Star confirms that the burn ban will stay in place until Kendall County receives significant rainfall. The ban is needed as first responders prepare for the wildfire season, often characterized by dry conditions or drought, (check) rising temperatures (check) and gusty winds like today (check).   Fire Marshall Brady Constantine says he’s not sure when the ban will be lifted, but currently most of the state is in burn ban mode as well.

Geneva girls soccer played for a state title yesterday after a huge semifinal win. McKinney Christian was their opponent in a big game, but Geneva would end up falling short, 4-1 the final. Now it’s the Geneva boys’ turn as they are in the state semifinal. Same stakes- game begins at 3 in Round Rock. Their opponent is the British International School of Houston.

The Spurs will be back home tonight as they welcome the Detroit Pistons to the FBC. Tip-off will be at 7.
