It’s Thursday June 11th. 

And it was on this date in 1969 that the John Wayne movie True Grit was released.  The movie also starred Glen Campbell in a role that was offered to Elvis Presley but then turned down after Colonel Tom Parker demanded top billing over Wayne. 

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has received confirmation of a case of New World Screwworm, a parasitic fly that infect open wounds, in Zavala County. A sample from the umbilical cord of a 3 week old calf was identified and confirmed to have the virus a few days ago, making this the first detection since a northward progression was seen from Central America in 2023. The Texas Animal Health Commission has established an infested zone in the area, and animal movement restrictions are in effect to prevent further spread of the pest.  

Here in Kendall County, there are no confirmed cases, but Kendall County Emergency Management Coordinator Brady Constantine wants to ensure our community is prepared should it occur. New World Screwworm can affect livestock, wildlife, pets, and, in rare cases, people, so animal owners are encouraged to keep an eye out for wounds that are not healing properly, foul smells, or strange behavior.
