It’s Monday February 23rd.

And it was on this date in 1945 that one of the most famous photos ever taken in World War 2 involved a Texan named Corporal Harlon Block.  21 year old Block was the stooping soldier guiding the base of the American Flag as it was being raised into the volcanic ash at Iwo Jima.   Block never saw the Pulitzer Prize winning picture because he was killed in action on March 1st.  He rests today in his hometown of Weslaco.

As seen in Boerne Star three Boerne firefighters are in the Panhandle as part of a task force to help battle the 8 Ball Fire, a raging 13,500 acre blaze that has spread to two counties. Firefighter Jonathan Vadnais, Driver Ryan Lynch and Lt. Toby Vicknair made their way up last week and have been hiking up to 10 miles of fireline a day. As of Friday, the 8 Ball Fire forced the evacuation of 400 homes and threatened more than 1,100 structures.

A long-awaited second entrance and exit for the Geneva School of Boerne is nearly complete, with plans to open sometime after Spring Break. The road connects the school to the I-10 west access road, and the project includes drainage improvements, two gate points, fencing and a security booth. The new entrance is the first step in removing traffic from the center of the academic areas and creating a more secure campus perimeter.

The Empty Bowls fundraiser was this weekend and ended up a massive success. Every bowl available was sold out, providing Hill Country Family Services with much needed funding to help the community. HCFS will announce the grand total from the event in the coming days.

If you’re driving down Main Street and notice a tarp, there’s a reason. Fumigation, as approved by the Fire Marshall, is beginning today, and will be taking place at 127, 129 and 133 Main street- that’s the space between the Chamber and The Boerne Grille. They will be tented in the process and are expected to remain wrapped for less than 24 hours.
