And it was on this date in 1974 that President Richard Nixon signed a bill requiring all states to lower the speed limit to 55 miles per hour. It was intended to save gas supplies during an embargo imposed by Arab oil-producing countries.
Federal speed limits were abolished in 1995. The highest speed limit in the country is 85 mph on Highway 130 which is the toll road around Austin.

A Boerne native and Champion graduate will be traveling to Hollywood in April to compete for the Illustrator of the Future Award. Jordan Smajstrla, who is now a Senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, will now compete with 11 other illustrators for the L. Ron Hubbard Golden Brush Award and $5,000 cash prize. She’ll attend workshops with some of the genre’s top names in writing and illustrating, all coming just a few months before her graduation and leap into the “working world” of illustration.
Also posted in the Boerne Star was information about a new Bird Flu developing in the state. The National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza, and disease experts indicate that HPAI is circulating among wild birds in Texas as waterbirds and waterfowl are on their wintering grounds. Bird feeders and water sources should be cleaned at least every two weeks with a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water, and bird baths should be cleaned every few days.
