It’s Friday June 19th.

And we say happy birthday to Morgan Day today, and special happy birthday going to out to Connie Hanks from Mark…you guys share a birthday with Nancy Wilson of Heart who turns 76 today, Paula Abdul is 64, and Lester Flatt Bluegrass guitarist with Flatt and Scruggs was born on this date in 1914.

It was on this date in 1865 that news of the end of the Civil War finally made its way to Galveston Texas - the War was over - and slaves were freed with the passing of the 13th Amendment. The holiday, known as Juneteenth, became a federal holiday in 2021 when Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, but has been honored in Texas since 1938.

Alright it’s Father’s Day Weekend and the Das Festival is officially back and starts tonight at 5:00 with the Das Pageant at 6, and live music at 7:15 all the way to midnight.  Saturday morning starts with the parade so get your spot.  Boerne Radio will be set up in main plaza right in front of Wild Bill calling the parade, and of course the parade will start with the Kendall Joint Honor Guard, please stand for the flag if your able, The Grand Marshall is Miss Contance, a rock star who’s read to our children for a generation, recently retired from the Library, and now reading at the Boerne Bookshop and every Saturday morning here on Boerne Radio.

And then in car number 3, it’s the Boerne Radio 2026 Father of the Year.  We have been accepting nominations along with entries to the Father’s Day Contest as seen at BoerneRadio.com, and the Das Festival judges had a tough decision but here’s how it sounded when we called Max Bordelon.

Audio: Max.

His Daughter Jacqueline did write in with her reasons why he’s the greatest dad in the world and that he’s the same silly guy with his grandkids just like he was when Jacqueline was a little girl.  Now Jacqueline for the last few years has been struggling with painful multiple sclerosis symptoms, but dad brings the joy, always by her side, picking her up when she’s fallen, and helps with her girls when she’s tired.  His name is Max Bordelon and he’s the reason Jackie always has optimism and hope.

So congrats Max…you get to ride in a 1973 Chevy Pickup from Bird Imports with your 2 granddaughters while we cheer you on.

Other highlights after the parade is the 1:00 Egg Toss, Wheelbarrow Races at 2, The Dachshund Races at 3, Sack Races at 4, and the watermelon eating contest at 5…and the beer stein holding contests happen all day with live music all night, then we do it again on Sunday.

And it’s not too late to enter the Boerne Radio Father’s Day Contest with those other great prizes from Riven Rock Ranch, The Buckhorn, Taylor’s Ace, Po Po’s, Wild Birds Unlimited, and a golf lesson from PGA Pro David Murrah.  Register today at boerneradio.com.

The stats are in for how the City of Boerne handled the flash flooding earlier in the week. City engineers compared rain gauge data and compared it to rainfall data from the National Weather Service, determining that the event was roughly equivalent to a 5-year-storm. In English, that means there is only a 20% chance a storm that size could occur in any given year. The Streets Department spent their time monitoring roadway conditions, especially low-lying areas like the Cibolo Creek Bridge. By mid-morning they were out at various low water crossings removing debris from the road. The Parks and Rec Department also worked to secure hazardous areas and reposition floating piers displaced by water at Boerne City Lake. The Boerne Police Department assisted a stalled vehicle on Plant Street, and the Fire Department conducted two high-water rescues in the predawn hours of Monday morning, rescuing the occupants from separate vehicles. Not to mention the City’s award winning Communication’s and Civic Engagement Department started sharing weather updates and information starting at 2 a.m. on Monday.

The South Texas Blood and Tissue Center is in desperate need of Type O Blood. If you feel the call to donate, you can schedule your appointment at southtexasblood.org/give or call 833-YOU-GIVE.
