Picture exactly when you will have accomplished a goal
Welcome to Before Breakfast, a production of iHeartRadio. Good Morning. This is Laura. Welcome to the Before Breakfast podcast. Today's tip is that if you want to see particular changes in your life, visualize yourself at a specific date when those changes have taken place. So I recently heard it said that everybody struggles to lose weight except for brides. Because brides are motivated by visualizing the way they want to look on their wedding day. With a clear vision for the day, they do what is needed to make the vision a reality. As longtime listeners know by now, weight loss is definitely not something we hype a lot on this podcast, but I think the insight about visualizing yourself on a specific date is relevant for all nins of contexts and goals. Brides to be are focused on a particular date, their wedding day, and they have a clear vision for that day. The vision of how they will look motivates choices between now and then, and even for those of us not getting married anytime soon, there's a lot to be said for picking a specific date in the future and visualizing ourselves on that day with particular changes in place. Maybe you visualize yourself running a turkey trot with your daughter on Thanksgiving Day. Suddenly you have an authentic deadline for being able to run three miles Thanksgiving Day. That makes it a lot easier to come up with a training plan and get yourself out the door to run, even on days when you'd rather stay on the couch. I suppose your house is feeling a little frumpy. You could pick a date a few months in the future and imagine opening the door to welcome friends to your home for a cup of coffee. You feel proud that your home is inviting. You don't feel like the need to explain why there are no pictures on the wall, and you don't apologize for the bag of stuff bound for goodwill that has been sitting by the door for a month. You don't wonder where you can suggest they sit, because you have a perfect spot in mind for conversation. You might be unhappy in your job and know the first step to prepare for a job search is to create a new resume, but you feel intimidated by the blank page. You could decide that you'll use the day off on Memorial Day to launch your job search. You imagine yourself having a resume in hand on Memorial Day that you feel confident in knowing that it conveys your strengths and experiences. Whether the change in your life you're envisioning is a professional project, a personal project, a home project, or anything else, try visualizing yourself on a specific date, having the vision to life. You could even write a paragraph or two about your life on that date, or make a sketch or collage to reflect your vision. When you set a vision and keep returning to it, you will find yourself more motivated so the vision becomes reality. In the meantime, this is Laura.
