More than 70 men have been arrested in Senegal as authorities intensify a crackdown on same-sex relations following the introduction of tougher anti-LGBTQ+ legislation earlier this year.

The crackdown has drawn strong criticism from human rights organisations and the United Nations.

 UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk had urged Senegal not to adopt the new law, warning of its potential impact on human rights and discrimination.

The UN has previously called on Senegal to decriminalise consensual same-sex relations between adults.
