71 men arrested and charged with "unnatural" acts in Senegal since country introduced new anti-LGBTQ+ law

View descriptionShare

More than 70 men have been arrested in Senegal since the country introduced a new anti-LGBTQ+ law earlier this year. On 7 August, the public prosecutor's office confirmed that 71 men had been arrested and charged with "unnatural acts" as authorities intensify a crackdown on same-sex relations.

A further 28 men had their charges dropped due to insufficient evidence. Human rights organisations have strongly criticised the legislation, arguing that it violates international human rights protections.

Unathi Batyahse spoke to journalist and geopolitical analyst, Amadou Camara Gueye.
