The law passed by parliament last month, with near-unanimous support, doubles the punishment for those convicted from prison sentences of one to five years to between five and 10 years. Several human rights groups have voiced concerns about the bill, including warning that it would dissuade people at risk from illnesses like HIV/AIDS from seeking help. A member of Gauteng's organised crime unit, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, has concluded his testimony at the Madlanga Commission after spending six days in the hot seat.

On Monday, he testified about the substantial sum of money found in a safe at his home and claims he made about South Africa's Deputy President Paul Mashatile meeting with Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Among the evidence presented was an exchange between Nkosi and a journalist, in which Nkosi requested the contact details of entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.

It is further alleged that a payment of R500 was made after those details were shared, raising concerns about professional conduct, confidentiality and the boundaries between journalists and sources.
