Journalist integrity under the spotlight as the Madlanga Commission continues

View descriptionShare

A member of Gauteng's organised crime unit, Sergeant Fannie Nkosi, has concluded his testimony at the Madlanga Commission after spending six days in the hot seat.

On Monday, he testified about the substantial sum of money found in a safe at his home and claims he made about South Africa's Deputy President Paul Mashatile meeting with Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala. Among the evidence presented was an exchange between Nkosi and a journalist, in which Nkosi requested the contact details of entertainment blogger Musa Khawula.

It is further alleged that a payment of R500 was made after those details were shared, raising concerns about professional conduct, confidentiality and the boundaries between journalists and sources.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Thandi Smith, Head of Programmes at Moxii Africa, formally known as Media Monitoring Africa to unpack what this means for journalistic integrity.
