Residents in Niger State, Nigeria, took to the streets overnight to protest after at least 33 detainees were found dead in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The detainees were among suspected illegal miners arrested by NSCDC operatives on September 15 and 16 during raids on illegal gold-mining sites.

Authorities initially suspected that a disease outbreak may have contributed to the deaths. However, they later said the cause of death had not yet been established and would be determined through medical examinations.

Lulu Gaboo spoke to Channel Africa’s Correspondent in Nigeria, Jonathan James Lyangohn.
