Malawi is facing a shortage of liquefied petroleum gas, or LPG, a fuel increasingly used by households as a cleaner alternative to charcoal and firewood.

Supplies have been running low in the country's major towns and cities since August, adding to wider problems with fuel, electricity, water and access to foreign currency. 

The government says it plans to distribute 117 000 LPG cookstoves and 53 000 electric cookstoves by 2030. But as George Mhango reports from Blantyre, households are still struggling to find LPG, with no immediate end to the shortages in sight.
