Kenyan government classifies expected El Niño rains as imminent national security threat

At least 28 people were killed in two mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Eighteen people were killed when eight gunmen opened fire at a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

In a separate shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 people were killed outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, while another 11 were injured.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says law enforcement agencies have been instructed to work around the clock to tackle the country’s high levels of violent crime.

The organisation is calling on community members, women’s and youth organisations, faith-based groups, trade unions and other progressive forces in Ekurhuleni to join the protest.

Abahlali baseMjondolo says the cases of femicide highlight what it describes as a failure of the systems meant to protect women from gender-based violence.

African leaders attending the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York have called for an end to the exploitation of the continent's vast natural resources without meaningful beneficiation during their statements on Thursday.

The leaders are also pushing for reforms to the UN Charter, arguing for a more equitable global system. The call comes as the world navigates an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape, requiring bold leadership to prevent further global fragmentation.
