African leaders urge end to natural resource plunder at 81st UNGA

At least 28 people were killed in two mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Eighteen people were killed when eight gunmen opened fire at a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

In a separate shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 people were killed outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, while another 11 were injured.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says law enforcement agencies have been instructed to work around the clock to tackle the country’s high levels of violent crime.
