Illegal mining is putting increasing pressure on Ghana's water resources

Illegal small-scale mining, commonly known as galamsey, is putting increasing pressure on Ghana's water resources. The mining activity has contaminated freshwater sources, while climate change is affecting rainfall and groundwater availability.

Ghanaian researcher Deborah Mawusi Ameh says Ghana urgently needs to explore alternative water sources, including technologies that extract water from the atmosphere.
