Doctors in Kenya are threatening to join a nurses' strike now in its sixth week, warning that the walkout is placing additional pressure on already overstretched hospitals. The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union, KMPDU, says doctors are facing an increased workload and cannot be expected to perform nursing duties.

The union says hospitals are already experiencing a shortage of doctors and that an effective healthcare system requires all health workers to work as a team.
