Morocco's King Mohammed VI has appointed Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country's prime minister, making her the first woman to hold the position in the North African nation. In a statement, the Royal Palace said the King had tasked El Mansouri, who serves as Urban Planning Minister and Mayor of Marrakesh, with forming a new government. The announcement comes four days after the results of Morocco's parliamentary elections were announced. US Ambassador to South Africa Leo Brent Bozell has once again found himself at the centre of a diplomatic dispute after being summoned by the South African government, following recent criticism of the government. Bozell was summoned in March, shortly after arriving in the country, for saying that he did not care that South African courts had determined the "Kill the Boer" chant to be protected speech. The latest dispute marks another escalation in the increasingly strained relationship between Pretoria and the United States. Washington remains firm in its concerns over South Africa's policies on land reform, race-based economic policy, farm murders and what the US considers hate speech. At least 28 people were killed in two mass shootings in South Africa over the weekend, highlighting the country’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Eighteen people were killed when eight gunmen opened fire at a bar near Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

In a separate shooting in the early hours of Sunday morning, 10 people were killed outside an entertainment venue in a township near Cape Town, while another 11 were injured.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says law enforcement agencies have been instructed to work around the clock to tackle the country’s high levels of violent crime.
