With the latest UNAIDS Special Report warning that Africa's hard-won progress against HIV remains fragile, the spotlight has again been shone on sub-Saharan Africa, which still accounts for half of all new HIV infections. Women continue to bear a disproportionate burden, accounting for six in ten new HIV acquisitions in sub-Saharan Africa. Adolescent girls and young women remain particularly vulnerable, with about 160,000 new HIV acquisitions among 15-to-24-year-olds in 2025, roughly 3,000 every week.  The report also highlights how gender inequality, violence, poverty-related vulnerability, food insecurity and limited livelihoods can undermine access to HIV prevention and care.  To helps us unpack how Africa can accelerate the fight against new HIV infections while protecting women, young people and mothers, we are joined from Geneva, by the Deputy Executive Director UNAIDS and United Nations Assistant Secretary-General, Dr Angeli Achreka
