Uganda celebrates 64 years of independence today, marking more than six decades since the country gained freedom from British colonial rule in 1962. But as Ugandans reflect on that journey, the country continues to grapple with economic pressures, unemployment, inequality and the rising cost of living. On the political front, questions around democracy, governance, human rights and political freedoms remain central as Uganda heads towards the 2026 elections. To unpack Uganda’s hopes and challenges going forward, we spoke to activist and lawyer, Godwin Toko from the Agora Centre for Research in Uganda.
