After the ANC failed to achieve majority votes in the country's recent elections, ANC President annouced that the party was seeking to form a government of national unity with a broad group of opposition parties. Last week, an eleventh-hour agreement was reached, following negotiations that went late into the night. This led to the formation of South Africa's first-ever multi-party coalition government with President Cyril Ramaphosa at its head.

These events were reminiscent of what took place in the country in 1994, when, South Africa transitioned from apartheid rule to democratic government.

Meanwhile, a group of political parties in South Africa - including the African Transformation Movement (ATM), Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) - calling themselves the Progressive Caucus is opposed to the Government of National Unity in its current form.

To reflect on these two historic moments in the country is Mr Roelf Meyer - Former politician and conflict resolution advisor. Roelf Meyer was part of those who negotiated SA's first transition from apartheid to democracy with President Cyril Ramaphosa, at the time he served as as chief negotiator for the National Party government....
