South Africa on high alert as anti-immigrant protests continue under tight security

View descriptionShare

South Africa remains on high alert as anti-immigrant protests unfold in several cities following the expiry of a midnight deadline for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country. Police say the morning has so far been largely calm, with no major incidents reported by first light, despite concerns over possible unrest. The protests come amid a large-scale repatriation drive, with thousands already bussed out of the country and others sheltering in consulates and overcrowded reception centres. Security forces remain deployed nationwide to prevent a repeat of past xenophobic violence, while organisers insist the marches are peaceful.  Peter Ndoro spoke to Dr Dale McKinley of Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia
