This morning on The Discourse, we return to South Africa's migration debate, a discussion unfolding against the backdrop of persistent inequality, high unemployment, strained public services, and growing tensions in some communities. In recent weeks, there have been renewed reports of hostility toward foreign nationals in certain areas, with concerns ranging from competition for informal work to incidents of intimidation and unrest, bringing fresh attention to an already contentious issue. As the conversation continues, we examine whether these tensions stem primarily from migration, or whether they reflect deeper economic and social challenges confronting the country. We also explore why some argue that the experiences of those living on the margins are too often absent from the national debate.  Tsepiso Makwetla spoke to Patrick Bond, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of Johannesburg, a political economist, political ecologist and scholar of social mobilisation.
