Heritage Day: Revisiting Shaka Zulu’s legacy, history and cultural identity

View descriptionShare

On The Discourse this morning we look at the South African holiday known as Heritage Day. As millions of South Africans take some much-earned rest, the history of the country's AmaZulu kingdom and the legacy of its most renowned king, Shaka, remain central to that tribe's conversations about identity, culture and heritage. King Shaka's death in 1828 has been recorded through historical accounts that were largely written from colonial and European perspectives, raising questions about how his story has been preserved and interpreted. The history of AmaZulu, including the rise of the Zulu kingdom, has also often been told through the lens of those who encountered and documented it from outside. So, how do we revisit this history, separate historical record from colonial interpretation, and understand Shaka's legacy in contemporary South Africa? To explore these questions, we are joined by Cultural Expert, Professor Musa Xulu.
