Global South activists rallying for justice and democracy hosted in SA, Cape Town

View descriptionShare

Across Africa, Asia and Latin America, a new generation of young activists is redefining democracy, connecting struggles, building movements, and creating new political languages.

From the Arab Spring to #EndSARS, #FeesMustFall and the Gen Z-led protests in Kenya, these movements reflect a shared demand for dignity, justice and accountability across the Global South.

In Cape Town, over 120 activists, scholars and artists are meeting at the South-South Social Movements Convergence, convened by Yiaga Africa and the Open Society Foundations, under the theme "Connected Struggles, Many Voices.

"One of the leading voices at this gathering is Dr Chukwuemeka Eze, Director of Democratic Futures in Africa at the Open Society Foundations, a peacebuilding and governance expert who has spent over two decades working on democratic transitions, mediation, and civic renewal across the continent.

Dr Eze joins us now to discuss how these movements are shaping the democratic future of the Global South.
