Burundi-Kenya tensions rise over treatment of Burundian nationals and reciprocal measures

Burundi's Foreign Affairs Minister Édouard Bizimana, has warned that continued anti-Burundian rhetoric and alleged harassment of Burundian nationals in Kenya could lead to reciprocal changes affecting Kenyans living in Burundi. Bizimana posted the statement on social media following a directive by Kenyan President William Ruto ordering a crackdown on undocumented foreign nationals and restricting small-scale, petty trading businesses to local citizens. Ruto had set Monday as the deadline for foreigners operating small-scale businesses to cease work. Long queues were seen outside Burundi's embassy in the capital, Nairobi, Burundians seeking repatriation.
