It’s time now for The Discourse, and this morning we go to Senegal, where the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights is conducting a pre-mission ahead of its 89th Ordinary Session.  The mission is part of preparations for the session, which will also mark 40 years since the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights came into force — a milestone for Africa’s human-rights system.  The anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on four decades of progress, as well as the challenges that remain in promoting and protecting human rights across the continent.For more on this, we crossed to Dakar, Senegal, and spoke to Abiola Idowu-Ojo, Executive Secretary of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

African Rights Commission Marks 40 Years of Human Rights Progress and Challenges

As countries mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 today - the 10th of September, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) has launched its annual suicide prevention campaign with a message: "Every Conversation Counts". The campaign highlights the power of starting conversations about suicide and mental health. SADAG says sometimes, simply asking someone how they are, listening without judgement, and creating a safe space to talk can make a meaningful difference. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide rates in Africa remain a critical public health concern. We spoke to Lebohang Mokoena, Volunteer Training Coordinator at SADAG

SADAG Urges South Africans to Start Conversations on Suicide Prevention

Burundi's Foreign Affairs Minister Édouard Bizimana, has warned that continued anti-Burundian rhetoric and alleged harassment of Burundian nationals in Kenya could lead to reciprocal changes affecting Kenyans living in Burundi. Bizimana posted the statement on social media following a directive by Kenyan President William Ruto ordering a crackdown on undocumented foreign nationals and restricting small-scale, petty trading businesses to local citizens. Ruto had set Monday as the deadline for foreigners operating small-scale businesses to cease work. Long queues were seen outside Burundi's embassy in the capital, Nairobi, Burundians seeking repatriation. Burundi-Kenya tensions rise over treatment of Burundian nationals and reciprocal measures

As world leaders prepare to gather at the UN General Assembly, aid agencies are urging governments and institutional donors to maintain support for essential health services in Sudan. They say as the ongoing war drives Sudan's needs, funding cuts are shrinking the response to the world's largest humanitarian crisis. An estimated 33.7 million people are projected to need humanitarian aid in 2026, representing the highest number globally. Nhlanhla Mahlangu reports.
