The United Nations (UN) has issued a strong condemnation of what it calls an intensifying crackdown on political opposition and press freedom in Uganda just weeks before the country's general elections. The UN's human-rights agency says, at least 550 people including supporters of the main opposition party National Unity Platform (NUP) have been arrested since the beginning of the year.
More than 300 of those arrests occurred after campaigning began in September.
