Tension between China and Taiwan are once again playing out on African soil, after Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te had to cancel a planned visit to Eswatini, one of the few countries that still maintains diplomatic ties with Taiwan.

 Several African nations reportedly denied overflight access to his aircraft. Taipei has accused Beijing of exerting pressure on countries such as Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar, highlighting the growing influence of China across the continent.

South Africa is stepping up preparations for its leadership role in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), as the country's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) hosts a three-day high-level Inter-departmental workshop with SADC Secretariat to align government priorities ahead of the country's SADC chairship. The session brings together senior government officials, state-owned enterprises, development finance institutions, and representatives from the SADC Secretariat in Gaborone, Botswana. The Maasai people, who have lived in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area in Tanzania- a UNESCO World Heritage Site say they are not ready to leave the area in the name of conservation. This after they protested in one of Tanzania's most important tourism destinations over their eviction. The protests on World Heritage Day sought to highlight UNESCO's complicity in the Tanzanian government's long-standing plan to evict them from the area .A panel of eight UN experts recently issued a public statement saying conservation efforts must not come at the expense of human rights.
