Tensions are rising in South Africa's (SA) KwaZulu-Natal province following marches in the Durban CBD targeting foreign-owned businesses, prompting a strong warning from police.
Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, has cautioned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that only law enforcement officials have the authority to verify documentation or take action against undocumented individuals.
The SA Police Service says while the right to protest is protected, it must not infringe on the rights of others, especially amid reports of intimidation, business closures, and alleged acts of lawlessness.
