Nearly 90% of waste ends up in landfill sites

View descriptionShare

South Africa is facing a growing waste crisis, generating an estimated 122 million tonnes of waste every year, yet nearly 90% of it still ends up in landfills. Despite having robust waste management legislation, challenges such as weak enforcement, limited infrastructure, and low landfill costs continue to undermine progress. Compared to countries like Australia and Spain, which recover much of their waste, South Africa is falling significantly behind. Experts, including Peter Ezra, are now calling for a shift toward smarter, data-driven waste management systems that not only reduce environmental impact but also create cost savings and long-term value for businesses. Mpho Sithole spoke to Peter Ezra, Managing Director of Rokiwaste.
