Activists, trade unions, and political organisations in SA gather in solidarity with Cuba

Following a pro-US/Israel march on Thursday, the US Consulate in Sandton, Johannesburg braved another protest on Friday, as activists, trade unions, and political organisations gathered in Sandton under the banner "Cuba Solidarity Now!" The rally, held on 17 April, marked the 65th anniversary of the failed US-backed invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs, while also aligning with Palestinian Prisoners' Day.

Prominent speakers and leaders addressed the crowd includes Ronald Kasrils former Minister of Intelligence Services of South Africa and Nomvula Mokonyane, First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), expressing solidarity with Cuba and Palestine, and condemning US foreign policy, economic sanctions, and ongoing global conflicts.

Despite rainy conditions, demonstrators turned out in numbers, calling for an end to the blockade on Cuba and broader international justice. 

Mpho Sithole spoke to by Snuki Zikalala, President of the ANC Veterans League, who was among those present at the protest.
