She was a sophomore in high school when a classmate asked a question that deserved a real answer: why do bad things happen to good people? Instead of sitting with the question, instead of offering presence and honesty and the willingness not to have everything figured out, she went home, printed twelve pages from the internet, and handed them over the next day. She watched them land in the trash can before she left class.

It is a small story. And it has stayed with her for years.

Most of us have a version of it. The moment we meant to show Jesus and instead showed something else. The conversation we handled poorly. The opportunity we recognize only in hindsight. The failure that did not announce itself as a failure until it was already over.

But here is where 2 Timothy 2:13 meets us: if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot disown Himself. This is not a license to fail carelessly or to treat grace as a permission slip for continued stumbling. It is the steady, unchanging reality of who God is. His faithfulness is not contingent on ours. He cannot be less than faithful any more than He can stop being God. That is simply not who He is.

We will stumble. We will miss the moment. We will hand someone twelve printed pages when what they needed was a listening heart. And God, in His mercy, remains faithful through all of it. He can still use us. He delights in our weakness because our weakness is where His strength becomes most visible. And He goes on asking us to try again, to look for the next opportunity, to be a little more like Jesus than we were the last time.

The mistakes do not get the final word. He does. And His word over our failures is mercy.

Ponder Tonight

God's faithfulness is rooted in His character, not our performance. He cannot disown Himself, which means His commitment to us does not waver when we stumble, miss the moment, or fall short of who we hoped to be.

Some of the most formative failures in our lives are the ones that teach us how to show up differently next time. The missed opportunity to walk alongside someone in their pain becomes the teacher that prepares us for the next one.

Showing Jesus to someone often has less to do with the information we provide and more to do with the presence we offer. Knowledge of God matters, but embodying Him in how we listen and walk alongside others is what most people actually need.

Asking God for mercy on past failures and for fresh opportunities to try again is one of the most honest and faith-filled prayers we can bring to Him tonight.

Your Evening Prayer

Lord Jesus,

As we prepare for sleep tonight, our minds remind us of the things we have done wrong. The failures that pile up, the moments we wish we could revisit, the people we let down when we had the chance to show them something of You. Our sins are many and our shortcomings are real.

But You, O Lord, are good and You are God. You are perfect, holy, and faithful. When we are faithless, forgive us. Help us become more like You. And though we do not deserve it, use us in the midst of our failures. Grant us mercy for our mistakes, and give us fresh opportunities to try again.

Continue to make something of our lives, Jesus. We love and trust You.
