Inside the Game with Dwyane Wade: Analyzing the Top Rookies & Around the League

Opening week is here, and TimeOut is back with its first full week of games. In the Rookie Report, we look at three first-year head coaches: Micah Nori in Portland, Dusty May in Dallas, and Tiago Splitter in Chicago. We ask the big question: how do you earn trust and command a locker room full of established stars?

Then it’s time for the Lob. Dwyane shares what he worked on with Donovan Mitchell this summer, including footwork, the mid-post game, and slowing things down for a playoff run. He also explains why Jalen Johnson didn’t wait to be handed the keys in Atlanta.

Plus, opening night reactions: the Pistons’ comeback against Boston, why ring night is the hardest game of the year for the Knicks, Philly’s statement win, and a motivated SGA chasing MVP number three.

Rookie Coaches, Ring Night & SGA’s MVP Hunt | Dwyane Wade TimeOut S3 Episode 2

The season is here, and Dwyane Wade and Chris Johnson are breaking it all down.

Rookie Report: D tells the story of his summer breakfast with No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa and the goal he challenged him to chase beyond the Hall of Fame. Then we break down Darryn Peterson’s bucket-getting in Utah and Yaxel Lendeborg as Golden State’s plug-and-play dark horse. We close the segment with why Caleb Wilson is our early Rookie of the Year pick.

Next up are the summer’s biggest moves. Giannis is in the county, and Spo had the Heat built for him before he ever arrived. LeBron is back in the East with Philly. Chris was in the gym with him all summer and explains why it could be scary hours. We also lay out the East vs. West split. The East is about grit, the elbows, and the mid-range coming back. The West is about pace, space, and guard-heavy rosters.

Plus: Are the Knicks repeating? (Too early.) Wemby and the Spurs’ next step, Jokic and DeMar in Denver, and the official start of the Luka era in LA.

Stick around to the end for D’s advice to Bam.

The Luka Era, Giannis in Miami & Our Rookie of the Year Pick | Dwyane Wade TimeOut S3 Ep 1

In this episode of The Timeout, Dwyane and Bob sit down with Dallas Mavericks rookie Morez Johnson for a real conversation about the journey from Riverdale to the NBA.

Morez covers growing up in Riverdale, playing with Chicago Demons and Mean Streets AAU, leaving Illinois through the transfer portal, and choosing Michigan because Coach Dusty May was locked in on player development. They won a national title, and then draft night came and he ended up in Dallas playing for Coach May again.

Dwyane connects over their shared Chicago and Harvey roots, gets into what the rookie wall actually feels like before All-Star break, and tells Morez to document everything, study real film not just highlights, and never leave anything on the table in year one. Closes by handing over his number for whenever Morez needs him.

Dwyane Wade Gives Morez Johnson Jr. the Advice He Needs Before NBA Rookie Season

In this episode of The Timeout, Dwyane Wade, D Wright, Bob, and Chris Johnson dive deep into Dorell Wright’s unconventional journey to the NBA and the lessons learned along the way.

The crew rewinds to 2004, when Dorell entered the NBA Draft straight from prep school with just four years of organized hoops under his belt. Miami took a chance—and Heat fans let their boos fly, wanting Jameer Nelson instead. But Dorell wasn’t fazed, laser-focused on escaping his “war zone” upbringing and stepping into the league with quiet confidence.

Wade, now a vet, admits he was among the doubters, while Wright shares the raw emotions of draft day and the pressure of proving himself. Pat Riley’s mentorship, Miami’s nightlife, and real brotherhood come up as Dorell reflects on finding his place—on and off the court.

Key themes hit hard: how it's okay to pivot, grow, and not know who you’ll be from day one. And how the streets treat ballplayers differently depending on the zip code, L.A. vs small-town realities.

Before Steph Curry & Klay Thompson, There Was Dorell Wright

In this episode of The Checkin with Dwyane Wade, Dwyane, Bob, and Dorell Wright turn the spotlight on co-host Chris Johnson for part one of his full story.

Chris opens up about growing up in Waco, Texas with two supportive fathers, a mother who never said a negative word about his biological dad, and a grandfather named Shot Shot who ran a barbecue business and whistled from blocks away when the streetlights came on. He refused to change his last name at 10 because Magic Johnson was the coldest player he’d ever seen, and his mother used his child support checks to teach him banking and let him buy Jordans and Starter jackets.

He talks about getting subbed out at the park as a kid, training alone on his imagination, a coach who slid plays to him on index cards during history class, and deciding at 13 that if the pros didn’t work out he was going to be one of the best coaches in the game. He also covers rupturing his Achilles, watching 9/11 unfold helpless in his mother’s bed, earning a master’s in counseling at 22 with a 4.2 GPA, and coaching a 16-0 national championship football team before getting his real shot in basketball.

Chris Johnson: The Trainer Behind the NBA's Biggest Stars

In this episode of The Checkin with Dwyane Wade, Dwyane and Bob open with pure nostalgia, Bob’s old DJ name “DJ Bowlegs,” his high school dance group “Skinny Boys in the House,” and how Miami teens had to verbally pitch themselves over the phone and verify their weight at Publix before a date.

Dwyane talks about his post-NBA recovery routine, steam, sauna, cold plunge, massages, and chiropractic work, visiting Zaya’s school for three days with his dad waking up to grits and bacon, and Zaya’s 19th birthday at Nobu alongside her second annual Translatable Ball. On business, he shares his pride in Steph Curry joining Li-Ning with the Wade brand and how risky that original signing felt 14 years ago.

They also get into Druski hosting the BET Awards, the new Scary Movie, and Dwyane going full fan mode yelling at the TV during a Bears game before closing out the “But Why?” segment with Bob’s recycled lunch sign peeve and Dwyane going off about people touching his clothes when he’s in white.

Dwyane Wade Is Still Chasing a Trophy, Just Not The One You’re Thinking

In this Ask Me Anything, Dwyane and Bob take fan questions on career, mindset, and a few surprises.

Dwyane opens up about playing without a meniscus since age 19, multiple knee surgeries, a high pain tolerance, and the intensive leg work his trainers used to keep him on the floor. On killer mentality, he says you’re born with it but it has to be nurtured, and that after retiring he had to go to therapy just to figure out where to put that energy.

His favorite championship is 2006, no hesitation, leading the team at 24 and jumping on the scorer’s table to soak it all in, a moment that later inspired a dance for a movie cameo. On recognition, he says the most meaningful respect came from the fear of the guys he played against, and despite missing the 2008 MVP he’s fully at peace with his legacy.

He also admits his guilty pleasure movie is Pootie Tang and that he watches Fast and Furious because he likes knowing exactly what’s going to happen.

Shaq opens up about sacrificing his numbers to empower Dwyane as the star, and admits his real motivation for winning was getting a ring before Kobe. Zo shares how a serious kidney illness made him take a massive pay cut just to get back and chase a title.

They talk about Pat Riley taking over and immediately bringing accountability, defining roles, and forcing the team to actually know each other’s families. And they own being the most unserious championship team ever, 41 parties on the road, three hour practices, until Shaq convinced Riley to move practice to the afternoon.

UD gets his flowers from everyone in the room for how he locked down Dirk Nowitzki, and Dwyane closes it out sharing that his whole motivation was making sure Shaq, Zo, and GP got the championships their legacies deserved.
