Managing Healthy Celebrations

View descriptionShare

This podcast is an essential guide to managing healthy celebrations. Paul and Trainer John share advice that we can all use to ensure that any time of celebration can be enjoyed without giving up on your fitness goals. This advice can be used effectively across any period of celebration - anything from a cruise, to the Christmas holidays.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Always have breakfast.
  • Make sure to choose a healthy breakfast as this will also help you focus on achieving your goals for the day. Breakfast is the meal people often skip but it’s the most important one of all.
  • If you don’t use it, you lose it
  • When you skip meals, your metabolism is at a stand-still and doesn’t have to work to break down food.  As a result, when you do eat your metabolism is not as efficient and stores food as fat. Skipping meals can cause overeating and bingeing, which alters your metabolic rate.
  • Be mindful of what you eat
  • Survey everything before you eat and ask yourself what will I enjoy having the most?
  • Choose to eat the foods that will bring you the most satisfaction. Make sure to avoid seconds and thirds by ensuring you fill up with vegetables. Keep your plate colourful with fruit and vegetables such as cranberries and broccoli.
  • Everything in moderation
  • An important rule is to have everything in moderation including drink, as alcohol adds to the calorie count for the day. It’s a celebration but don’t over-indulge or you’ll suffer later. Listen to your body when you begin to feel full take notice and stop as this is one way to stop over-eating.

BEST MOMENTS

“Keep it clean - to stay lean!

“Important to realise alcohol adds to the calorie count for the day”

“Before a meal, drink some water; often hunger pains are actually thirst pains”

ABOUT THE HOST

Something that’s never been attached to Paul is the label ‘normal’ – for which he is immensely proud.  He definitely subscribes to being one of those mentioned – in the Steve Jobs quote:

“Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
