Zakhele Mthethwa, the 22-year-old man seen in a viral video allegedly assaulting an elderly woman, has appeared in court. The charge against him has been upgraded from assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to attempted murder. Mthethwa has been remanded in custody to secure legal representation through legal aid and is expected back in court on Thursday, 11 June 2026. Witness I testifying off camera at the Madlanga Commission has revealed a previously undisclosed two-year stay at a property linked to alleged underworld kingpin Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, saying it followed a violent attack he suffered in which he was injured and his state firearm stolen. He maintains he had no direct dealings with Matlala, insisting the arrangement was facilitated through Captain Zungu. Witness I is back today at the commission to continue his testimony relating to the Aeroton drug bust in the south of Johannesburg. The drug bust took place in Aeroton in 2021, where more than 700 kilograms of drugs were seized.

Parliament's Portfolio Committees on Transport and Home Affairs have expressed shock at the widespread abuse of Traffic Register Numbers, or TRNs, allegedly by criminal syndicates. MPs heard that around one million TRN applications may have been supported by fraudulent documents. The committees say the system has been exploited to open bank accounts, purchase vehicles and bypass immigration controls. Twelve people were killed and nine others wounded after a group of men randomly opened fire in the informal settlement. The more than ten suspects then fled the scene in a taxi.
