"ELECTION WEDNESDAYS BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE IEC". With just three days remaining before the proclamation of the election date, the Electoral Commission calls on all eligible voters to use this time to register to vote or update their voter registration details ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections. On Friday, 7 August 2026, the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA), Velenkosini Hlabisa, will proclaim the election date. At midnight on the day of the proclamation, the voters' roll will close, marking the beginning of the next phase of the electoral programme. The election timetable, which outlines key electoral processes such as the certification of the voters' roll, opening of candidate nominations, the launch of the code of conduct and other statutory activities, will then come into effect. South Africans who have not yet registered to vote, or who need to update their registration details, are encouraged to do so through the online Voter Registration Portal at registertovote.elections.org.za.
