The much-anticipated start to the 11th South Africa AIDS conference that is set to take place at the Durban ICC has been marred with protests from various organisations which have gathered under the campaign, Love Picketing. Hundred from these health-based organisations are making their way through the streets of the Durban CBD with the intention to raise concerns over the quality of the country's health-care system together with raising concerns about the scourge of HIV/AIDS and teen pregnancy. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to Executive Manager for Stakeholder Relations and Campaigns at the South African National Aids Council, Reverend Zwo Nevhutalu.

Eleventh South Africa AIDS conference gets underway in Durban

Five suspects arrested in a multi-million rand drug bust on a farm in Musina, Limpopo last month have  abandoned bail at the Musina magistrate's court. The suspects were arrested during a police operation. They including two Mexican nationals, two Zimbabwean nationals and a Malawian national. The five foreign nationals, aged between 20 and 47, include Mariano Barraza and Joan Castillo from Mexico and three Zimbabwean nationals, Tichaona Nyamukanga, Tanaka Nyamukanga and Lee Mubayi. Their defense lawyer Attorney Wiets Beukes informed the court that they will inform the court about a possible bail application at a later stage. Beukes told the court that they are not ready to proceed as a Spanish interpreter is not available. Beukes also told court that accused number 5 needs immediate medical attention, as he had seizures yesterday in custody. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC news reporter Avhapfani Munyai

Five foreign nationals abandon bail after drug bust

Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale says a prisoner who escaped from the Rooigrond Maximum Correctional Centre near Mahikeng in the North West has been rearrested. Edward Madiba is serving a 20-year sentence for robbery, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping and parole violation. Speaking at a media briefing this morning, Thobakgale also confirmed that investigations are underway into who may have assisted Madiba in his escape.

The protesters are expected to march to the Home Affairs Refugee Reception Centre, where refugees have been camping for several months. Police have been deployed heavily in the area, with part of Che Guevara Road cordoned off following last week's violent confrontation between the two groups.
