A forensic investigation by the Eastern Cape Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs has found that a R20 million-rand tender awarded for the construction of the Lesseyton Sportsfield, outside Komani, was awarded irregularly. COGTA MEC, Zolile Williams tabled the report to the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality council on Wednesday, adding that the investigation had revealed that the contractor escalated prices during the project without following tender processes. Eastern Cape COGTA says criminal charges will be opened against Enoch Mgijima Local Municipal officials involved in irregular awarding of R20 million stadium tender

Former head of the National Prosecuting Authority Vusi Pikoli has told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that the independence of the National Prosecuting Authority must be protected, even while maintaining cooperation with the government. Pikoli says his approach was always based on tactical flexibility, sharing information where necessary without compromising the NPA's constitutional independence. Pikoli also recalled a meeting with several ministers where concerns were raised about prosecutions linked to apartheid-era activities. He says some feared that pursuing certain cases could trigger renewed calls to prosecute former liberation movement members for actions before 1994. Shibiri was responding to Evidence Leader Lee Seegels-Ncube's question on his invoment in the arrest of Katiso KT Molefe whilst he was on leave and off duty.
