Shack fires in the Western Cape have claimed yet another life. One person has died, in a blaze in the Vrygrond informal settlement near Muizenberg. According to the ward councillor in the Vrygrond area - sixteen structures have been destroyed in the early morning fire. It is the fourth fire incident in the ward this month. On Christmas Eve, a 30- year old man died in Nomzamo in the Strand due to smoke inhalation.

Mozambique is reeling under its worst election-related violence since its civil war ended 32 years ago. A deadly prison riot in Mozambique's capital, Maputo, has left about 33 people dead and 15 others injured, according to the country's police general commander, Bernardino Rafael. Thousands of inmates reportedly escaped from a maximum-security prison in Maputo yesterday.  Authorities have since recaptured 150 prisoners. A total of 172 babies were born on Christmas Day at various hospitals across Limpopo.  Amongst the teens giving birth in the province was a 13 year-old girl child.
