The government has allocated R26 billion to provinces to strengthen the HIV/AIDS programme, focusing on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission and the provision of antiretrovirals. As part of the targeted and responsible savings initiative, provinces will also repurpose some of their funding to meet their obligations towards PEPFAR, following the withdrawal of US funding. Additionally, R21.3 billion has been allocated to the health sector over the medium term to support the compensation and employment of doctors, as well as to cover shortfalls in goods and services expenditure. Here are some other highlights of the budget speech. An improvement in revenue collections has allowed government to scrap 20 billion rand in planned tax increases. Godongwana says the economy is gaining traction the debt situation is stabilising. More than a trillion rand is expected to be spent on infrastructure projects over the medium term. The railways, electricity supply and water services are to benefit. The Minister announced that the limit for tax-free savings increases from 36-thousand rand to 46 thousand rand annually. He said the so called sin taxes on tobacco and alcohol would be increased in line with inflation.
